UV Protection: How Window Treatments Save Your Furniture and Floors

Most people don't realize that the sun is slowly destroying their furniture, artwork, and flooring — even on cloudy days. UV radiation is invisible but relentless, and window treatments are your first and best line of defense.

How UV Rays Damage Your Interiors

Ultraviolet radiation causes photodegradation — the breakdown of materials at a molecular level:

  • Wood flooring: Fades and discolors unevenly, especially near windows
  • Upholstery: Fabrics weaken and colors fade, often within 1-2 years of direct exposure
  • Artwork: Irreversible fading of paintings, photographs, and prints
  • Leather: Dries out, cracks, and discolors
  • Carpets and rugs: Fade in patterns that mirror window shapes
  • The damage is cumulative and largely irreversible. Once fading occurs, the only solution is replacement or restoration — far more expensive than prevention.

Which Window Treatments Block UV Best?

    Solar Roller Shades

Solar fabrics are engineered specifically for UV protection:

  • 1% openness fabrics: Block 99% of UV rays while preserving the view
  • 3% openness fabrics: Block 95-97% of UV
  • 5% openness fabrics: Block 90-95% of UV
  • Metalized backing: Reflects UV and heat before they enter the room
  • Blackout Shades

Full blackout fabrics block 100% of UV radiation and 100% of visible light. Best for:

  • Rooms with valuable art collections
  • Media rooms with sensitive electronics
  • Bedrooms where total darkness is desired
  • Dual Shades (Zebra / Sheer Elegance)

Zebra shades alternate sheer and solid bands. When aligned, the solid bands block UV; the sheer bands filter light. UV blocking depends on band alignment — approximately 70-90% when fully closed.

    Window Film vs. Window Treatments

Some clients ask about UV-blocking window film. While effective, film has limitations:

  • Applied directly to glass — permanent and difficult to remove
  • May void window manufacturer warranties
  • Does nothing for heat insulation or light control
  • No aesthetic flexibility
  • Window treatments offer UV protection PLUS light control, privacy, insulation, and design flexibility — all in one solution.

    Protecting Specific Items

    Art Collections

Use museum-grade UV-filtering glazing on frames AND blackout or 1% solar shades on windows. Double protection is standard in galleries and museums.

    Hardwood Floors

Install solar shades on all windows receiving direct sun. Consider exterior shades for large windows and sliding glass doors where floor exposure is greatest.

    Leather Furniture

Leather is especially vulnerable. Keep solar shades closed during peak UV hours (10am-4pm) in rooms with leather furniture. Motorized shades with automated schedules make this effortless.

    Commercial UV Protection

For retail stores, restaurants, and offices:

  • UV damage to merchandise and displays directly impacts revenue
  • Solar shades reduce glare on computer screens, improving productivity
  • Printed shades can incorporate UV-blocking into branded designs
  • Exterior shades protect storefront displays from the harshest sun
